Cross processing

a
a
In this section we looked at cross processing. Cross Processing involved changing the colour of an image and adding tone. Firstly I loaded up the image. Then I added a curve adjustments layer curves. I did this by going to layer and then to curve adjustments and then curves. The idea was to change certain colours to different shapes. For this which is the blue coloured one I used an inverted shape on the curve to create this.

For green I added a slight s shape.

And for red I made a more obvious s shape. The last image shows all three together.

In design Drop Cap, guides, images, text

a
a
In this weeks practical lesson I looked at in-design. I started off looking at placing images into In-design. Decide to use smiley faces. I did this by saving an image and placing it into a rectangular box that I had drawn previously. Then i resized them and moved them into the centre of the frame. I did this by using the white arrow. The black arrow moved the rectangle i had originally drawn.  The I started to use the text boxes and placing just old and general documents into the boxes i made as you can see above. The title i changed by using the stroke option to the far right. This makes the text bigger and gives an outline to the text and then i added colour to it also. I used the black arrow to the highlight the text when doing so.

For the images on the left hand side I created guides to separate the rectangles that i drew. This allowed me to shape the images and place them wherever I wanted them to go. Then I saved 6 images in my in-design folder and placed them and then manipulated them.  For the whole text, again I did the same as what i did for the title. I placed the text in to the text boxes. I text wrapped it. And then I moved the text into the frame using the white arrow tool. finally I added the drop cap. I did this by highlighting a piece of text and going to the drop cap to change the first letter by making it larger.

Healing Brush Tool Usage

a
a

This is the before and after shots of Zoe. Today I used the healing brush tool to change the way someone would look. To do this I went to photoshop, uploaded a photo and started to edit. Firstly I duplicated the layer by going to layers, shift then duplicate. this allowed me to make a first layer to go back to if things went wrong. Then I started with the healing brush tool itself. This gave me a circle icon which i could hover over the image. Then I used the alt key over the image and then clicked on a piece of skin which was of a normal colour. This would allow me to use this piece of skin for all of the spots and make change the image. I simply went over any spots or red areas, making sure i didn't hit any eyes, nose or eyebrows etc and then I was left with this image.

dodge and burn tool

a
Then I attempted to use the dodge and burn tool for the first time. i felt that this tool really changed the picture as you could identify the places you wanted to tone up and then you can either dodge. Which in this context means that you add lightness to the image, or burn which means to darken the image.

As you can see in this image I have emphasised the trees by using the burn tool and added darkness to the sides of the subjects faces to create shadows. For the top of the trees I have used the dodge tool just to add more light.

a
Then there is the unsharpened tool which I used. There is also the sharpened masked image swell which is shown below.

a

The sharpened masked tool basically sharpens up the image and creates a more darkened contrast compared to the unsharpened image.

Photographic Post Production Work

a
In todays lesson I started to look at what photographers will do after they have taken their pictures. This is basically changing how the picture looks.

This was the original Image that I used as without any changes at all.

This image had all the combined auto affects of auto tone, auto colour and auto contrast. Its changed by adding more definition to the picture. This means that it stands out more instead of the original.

shutter speeds

a
Today I tried some different shutter speeds. I learnt that slow shutter speeds are great for capturing movement but high shutter speeds are good for still images. Its also very important to match the shutter speed to the lighting conditions. Otherwise the images can be underexposed or overexposed. This picture above is one took at 1/500 th of a second as that was the best speed for running. Here the subjects motion is caught by the fast shutter speed. I think the quality is good because you can see that the subject is moving quickly.

This picture has an even quicker shutter speed. The speed here was 1/60th of a second which is why motion blur came into the picture. The quality isn't to brilliant as it has motion blur.

These pictures were part of an early experiment as this was also taken at 1/60th.

This picture was taken at 1/250th of a second as I experimented with different positions, the quality is pretty good in that one.The following two were all taken at 1/500th also as they were at running speeds. But we changed the angles to see what different movements and different facial expressions we could see. Although the last one had terrible quality as it was far a way which is why I redid this one and its at the beginning.

a

Both of these images were part of my composition as well as part of my six. These involve tilting up and tilting down. This can either give power to the subject or make them insignificant.

Composition shots - 1st attempt

This image shows the effect of tilt and the use of the different eye lines form both characters. almost as if one is more powerful than the other.

a

This image shows my use of a medium shot distance but also with my use of lines. The path suggests this journey that this character is going to go on.
This is my work on framed composition. This shows that the character is trapped whether it by physically or emotionally.

Here I tried to add a difference to the rule of thirds by changing the angle to a more slanted one. Also the water on some of the steps creates different textures also.

Induction Evaluation

Induction Evaluation

When taking the photos I used manual focus. I learned that the rings on the camera affected not only the zoom but the focus on the image that is shown. I learnt that changing the focus could affect the image created dramatically as a bad decision on focus creates a bad image with no clear directive to what is the focus. It can be used to your advantage more importantly as the zoom can allow you to have focus but from different distances, which would be important for medium distant shots or close ups. The T stance is also quite a useful stance. It became quite apparent that using the t stance created manoeuvrability for the photographer, as I was able to take shots from different angles. Portrait mode allowed me to take photos of mid distant shots of the person I was photographing. Landscape I learnt was more useful for when I was taking pictures of flat landscapes or shots from a larger distant, normally if the persons face isn’t needed.  I did try taking a photo landscape but this sort of stretched the focus (person) that I was aiming at which didn’t look brilliant as an end product. All my images were in focus. To prove this I would probably show all my images or at least on my blog some of my images to prove this. Lighting was interesting because when I was taking the photos there was a lot of front light because there was nothing blocking the suns light and some of the images had the person looking directly, which I then maneuverer to adjust my position to get the side light on the left hand side as instructed. I leant that this can enhance the image or make the face to bright in some cases.

a

My composure was fairly good I did take some images were the person moved slightly which showed up as a bit of a blur on the final image, I learnt that to take better pictures both the photographer and the person being photographed have to be still to get the best image. I didn’t use the rule of thirds but some of my images did have a rule of thirds. The eye line was ok for the shots I was taking but I did learn that the rule of thirds is an aspect that helps with the shots that I was taking. Looking at the background of my images I feel in most cases it does matter but at first I didn’t really take into account the light but then I started moving my subject around and communicating with him more as I took more shots and I asked him to move when he needed to, to get the left hand side light or to lean on objects or to sit. I think it was a valuable lesson that I have to talk to the subject if I am to get the best photos I can because they can create actions or show facial expressions.

Photoshop was an interesting learning curve. I already knew some tools such as changing text size and colour but the other tools such as FX was a brilliant experience, as I learnt how I can change text and shapes and images by adding effects from FX to enhance them further. Other tools I used were the elliptical tool by pressing shift+dragging. Others were fairly easy to control and use such as command +t to keep the original image and get rid of the ants. I found the changing image size tool difficult because there were a couple of intricate steps to get the image correct without stretching. I felt the text was well controlled I kept it in all in the same font and enhanced sizes of words to grab readers initial attention were necessary. I didn’t get to cut out images or download fonts but I did add effects like drop shadow and bevel and emboss. I did this by clicking on the layer I wanted to change and clicking on FX and then the options came up and I adjusted each layer. Finally the colours I used were black, red, yellow and white. This was because firstly these colours came from my initial research on NME and Kerrang. I find that these colours are also very energetic which match my target audience which is vital for magazines.

If I were to improve the front cover in any way I would probably refine the banners and mix the colours up a bit more maybe overlap some ell lines onto the image as well which would look slightly better and give the magazine and edge, different text sizes on huge headlines could create more emphasis and the use of celebrity endorsement would create more. I felt my strengths were that it was very relatable for the target audience with the subject being a teenager. The colours were bright and energetic and enthusiastic about the subject I was showing. The headings with affects added looked really good and the photo I took was the best one I took which for a beginner was pretty good.

3 sample photos

a

 These were the pictures
I chose from 20 to blog as they have either good or bad points. The one on the right was taken with a good background and was the best for the left and side light but it wasn't very central and the eye line wasn't perfect. The one on the left was a good use of my stance, and the last one had a good rule of thirds but too much light got the face.
