Photographic Skills
Which of the following photographic
features/equipment have you used on a camera before:
Feature
Yes
No
Comments if yes – where have you completed this
skills and to what level
Manual Focus features
Y
The first couple of blog entries on my blog show
some first timework with the camera. In those shots I used manual focus
features to zoom in on the subject or zoom out. I think I have attained a
very good level in using the manual focus features.
Shutter Speed
Y
There is a blog entry dedicated to my use of
shutter speeds. I used high and low shutter speeds to change the image in
terms of how much motion is captured. I took shots at 1/60th,
1/500th and 1/250th of a second. I didn’t cover imagery
that were at higher shutter speeds such as 1/1600th of a second
but I understand how to use the shutter speed and what happened to the
imagery so I would say I have completed these skills to a good level.

Aperture control
Y
In a recent blog entry I experimented with the
aperture control. The aperture control showed how much of the background was
in focus. This was called the depth in field. I thick I have a very good
level of understanding when it comes to the aperture control as the images on
my blog show the level of the depth of field used.
ISO Control
Y
The ISO control was also part of the aperture blog
entry as I experimented with the aperture settings such as F11/13 and ISO
200. The ISO setting depended on the light in the background. The scale on my
camera ranged from 100 to 3600. 100 being used in very light conditions and 3600
being used in dark conditions. Again, I think that the ISO control I have
used has been to a good level along with the Aperture setting.

A tripod
Y
The tripod I have used before and when it came to
my project I used it for landscape shots of my subjects. I think I can use
the tripod affectively in terms of its height.
External flash
Y
While doing my project I encountered the use of the
external flash when using the cameras and the backdrops and the soft boxes
and equipment similar to this. I only used this for a small number of shots
as I was trying to reflect that light on to the other side of the persons
face to create broad lighting. I think I have achieved this to a moderate
level.

Photoshop Skills

used before:

Text control
Y
I used text control to shape my text into the way I
wanted. But I was careful not to stretch the text. Holding shift and dragging
the corner of the text box did this. I could also just change the font size
as well, which is a much easier starting point. Overall I think that I have
mastered text control as I already used text control before.

Brushes
Y
I used a variety of brush tools in different
circumstances. Firstly I used a basic snowflake brush for my CD cover in one
of my blog entries and secondly I used the heal brush tool on a image to make
it more appealing. I feel I have completed this skill to a good level.
Layers
Y
I used layers throughout my time on Photoshop. I
manipulated the layers by duplicating or placing one in front of another. I
also tried using bevel and emboss, drop shadow and other skills but I decide
to use a plain font for my project. I feel I have achieved this to a very
good level.

Shape creation
Y
I have used the rectangle shape tool and other
shape tools to create button sells for my project. This can be seen in my
recent blog entry. I Feel I have mastered this skill.
Brightness and contrast
control
Y
I have used the brightness and contrast control on
a number of images. More recently the final product I produced had adjusted
brightness and contrast to make the product better. I feel I have an average
understanding of using this skill.

Colour curves adjustment
Y
I used the colour curve adjustment tool when I did
the cross processing session. I went and took the images before adjusting the
curves to change the overall colour of the image, which included the subject
and background. I think I have a moderate understanding of this skill.
Resolution setting control
Y
Magnetic lasso, polygon
lasso tool, pen tool
Y
I used this tool when I was creating sell lines,
which had a different sized outline. Basically I used the lasso tool and the
pen tool to join the whole text and the background together as one layer.
This made moving the layer easier. I have a good understanding of this technique.
Cropping tool
Y
At first I was using the cropping tool to cut out
the imagery but then I decided against it after I had to go round the image
and refine. I did use it for my the England badge on the front cover as I
cropped the white around the image out.
Clone tool
Y
I have used the clone tool to clone some of the
sell lines. I have used this tool affectively.

Margin and column guide
creation
Y
I used the margin and column guides to help size
and order my imagery on my DPS. The column guides I used to order the text
into three colours. I have completed this skill to a good level.
Inserting an image ID
Y
I feel I have a very good understanding of this
skill. Through my project I was constantly placing images into Photoshop in
order to edit them or in this case into InDesign by creating a rectangle box
then placing.
Resizing images in ID
Y
Again I feel I have a good knowledge of how to use
this skill. This is because I have forgotten to hold shift in the past and
have had to try and resize the images properly. I used this tool to resize my
images in order of my text and how I wanted the layout to look
Text manipulation –
resizing, rotation
Y
I have a very good understanding of how to use the
text manipulation tools. This is because I have resized my imagery in terms
of my layout and how my actual magazine looked.
Text manipulation –
controlling kerning and leading
Y
I have attempted to use this in terms of kerning
but didn’t like the way it looked. I did use leading for the DPS though by
increasing the leading on the text. I have completed this skill to a good
level.
Text flow creation
Y
My text flow has reached all pages so I have shown
that I can use this tool. I did this by placing the text into a column and
then clicking on the red box to move the text over into the next column. I
have a achieved this skill to a good level.

Shape/line creation In
design
Y
I used lines to add to my layout to make it
standout and I also used it to outline my breakout box. I have a very good
level in using this skill.
Exporting to PDF from
In-design
Y
To finish my product I had to export it as a PDF. I
did this because it was uploaded to the Moodle hand in and it makes the whole
project easier to transfer. I have a good understanding of this skill.
Text Wrap
Y
My use of text wrap was limited, as I didn’t really
need to use it much apart from for the masthead. This allowed me to move it
about easier. I have a good knowledge when it comes to this skill.
Number of new
skills achieved:
(Compare with
your initial skills assessment)
I have
achieved 19 new skills from the first skills assessment. I feel that I could
have achieved more when using Photoshop or InDesign, but not with my
photography skills because I only used the skills I needed to use.
