dodge and burn tool

Then I attempted to use the dodge and burn tool for the first time. i felt that this tool really changed the picture as you could identify the places you wanted to tone up and then you can either dodge. Which in this context means that you add lightness to the image, or burn which means to darken the image.

As you can see in this image I have emphasised the trees by using the burn tool and added darkness to the sides of the subjects faces to create shadows. For the top of the trees I have used the dodge tool just to add more light.
